The ANC at 100 The ANC is this week celebrating its 100 birthday. President Zuma has been at the forefront of the R100m (£7.9m) festivities, set up to extol the party's victory over apartheid and almost twenty years in power. But, not everyone is happy. There are deep divisions within the party, exemplified by the expulsion of Youth Leader Julius Malema. Others, most notably Nobel Award winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu, have strongly criticised the ANC leadership. In a furious denunciation he proclaimed that he "prays for the downfall of the ANC" saying that Zuma's leadership is "as bad as the apartheid Government". Millions of South Africans continue to live in poverty and there is growing anger at the distance between the lives of the ANC-connected elite and the poor. As one commentator put it, why did they not spend the R100m on 100 schools or 100 health clinics?
Independence Campaign: The Gloves Are Off Ok, so here we go! It might be 2014, it might be earlier. We'll see. But the battle of wills between the Westminster and Scottish governments is up and running. Big Time. This article explains the background to the recent rows over who wants what in the referendum arrangements. It also looks at what independence might mean and how high profile SNP policies are closely connected with the aspirations of key Scottish voters.
Two in a Row? Will Obama be re-elected? November will see President Obama seek a second term as President. His Presidency has been a troubled one; the financial storm of the credit crunch has meant cuts in the services many of his supporters rely on. The 2010 mid-term elections gave the Tea Party influenced Republicans a majority in the House of Representatives and the confidence to oppose the President at every turn. In this article we assess how much of what he promised has been delivered. We also assess the prospects of his Republican challengers as the Primary season kicks off.
Spotlight Shines Early on the Brown Premiership Under the Public Records Act 1958, Government papers are declassified 30 years after being written*. They are made available in an annual batch by the National Archives at Kew. So, for all this time, we rely on anecdotal evidence from Cabinet Ministers to know what really goes on within Cabinet meetings. Richard Crossman's Diaries, published in 1975, a year after he died, were the first time a Cabinet Minister had revealed the inner workings of Government. And this was some five years after he had left Government. Cabinet Ministers get their memoirs out a lot quicker these days. A recent series of them claim to reveal a great deal about Prime Minister Gordon Brown's relationship with his Cabinet.
